Juraperle is a filter fine granulation medium on the basis of fossil limestone structures. It is applied to increase the pH of poor water, and possibly iron removal. During filtration, the free CO² is converted to bicarbonate and calcium is dissolved respectively. By this, the pH and hardness rate is raised. In addition, the iron is also filtered. Juraperle is a reactive media and during its use it is gradually dissolved by the water being treated and will therefore require periodic replacement.

How Juraperle works

Water Flows Through the Media
Water that has a low pH (acidic water) passes through a vessel filled with Juraperle granules.

Chemical Reaction With Acid in Water

The calcium carbonate reacts with free dissolved CO₂ and acidic components in the water.

Calcium dissolves into the water and bicarbonate is formed, which neutralises acidity and raises the pH.

pH Correction and Mineral Addition

As calcium dissolves, the pH increases gradually to a more neutral level (often toward pH 7–8 depending on conditions).

Small amounts of calcium (and sometimes magnesium) are added, which can also increase water hardness slightly.

Replenishment

Juraperle slowly dissolves over time, meaning the media is consumed in the process and must be topped up or replaced periodically (often annually).

Optional Backwashing

Many systems include a backwash valve so the media can be rinsed occasionally to remove captured iron, manganese, and particulates, and to prevent channelling (uneven water flow through the media).
