Hydro-anthracite works as a physical filtration medium. It removes impurities from water mainly by straining and depth filtration, not by chemical reactions.

  • Water flows through a deep, porous bed, water enters the filter and flows downward through a packed bed of hydro-anthracite grains. These grains are hard, irregular in shape and relatively large compared to sand. This creates lots of void spaces between particles.
  • Particles get trapped, as water moves through the bed larger particles get trapped near the top and smaller particles penetrate deeper and get caught further down. This is called depth filtration, and it’s why hydro-anthracite can hold more dirt before clogging compared to fine sand.
  • Low density equals solids are captured more effectively. Hydro-anthracite has a lower density than sand, which means, it sits on top in multimedia filters and it allows higher filtration rates, solids distribute throughout the bed instead of forming a surface cake. Resulting in longer filter runs and less pressure drop.
  • Minimal chemical interaction. Hydro-anthracite is chemically inert and very low in ash and impurities, so it doesn’t leach contaminants into the water. It’s removing solids physically, not absorbing chemicals like activated carbon does.
  • Backwashing cleans and resets the bed. When the filter gets dirty water (sometimes air + water) flows upward, the bed expands and fluidizes, trapped solids are released and flushed away
